Carpenters work on almost any construction site imaginable, including new construction and remodeling, such as single-family homes; condominium and apartment projects; office towers, corporate and industrial buildings; new and remodeled hospitals, malls, stores and offices; and public projects such as stadiums, arenas, roads, bridges, schools and university buildings.
Carpenters need more than just good math and geometry skills; they have to be tough and flexible, able to work indoors or out, in the summer heat and humidity or in the bitter cold and snow of winter.

Carpenters Local 106 offers an apprenticeship program designed to help you craft a successful career in carpentry while earning as you learn. With a state-of-the-art training center located in Altoona, you’ll gain hands-on experience using the latest tools and techniques, all while working alongside skilled professionals who are masters of their craft.
Unlike traditional education paths, there’s no need to worry about student loan debt. Our program is tuition-free, and you’ll earn a paycheck from day one, giving you the financial freedom to start building your future immediately.
Throughout the program, you’ll develop a wide range of carpentry skills—from framing and concrete forms to finish work and advanced construction methods. With Local 106, you’ll receive top-notch training that sets you apart in the industry while ensuring you’re always supported by the strength of the union.
Four (4) year apprenticeship
Related training is required and accomplished in 40 hour increments Monday-Friday running four to five times a year.
Beginning apprentices start at 60% of Journeyworker wages. Advancement occurs in 5% increments when on the job training hours and classroom hours have met the next level requirements. Each level takes 6-7 months on average. Advanced placement is available based on experience and testing. Benefits include, health insurance, pension plans and paid training.
